gururbrahmā gururviṣṇuḥ gururdēvō mahēśvaraḥ |
gururēva parambrahma tasmai śrīguravē namaḥ ‖ 3 ‖
Brahmanandam parama sukhadam kevalam jnaanamurtim
Dvandvaateetam gaganasadrusham tatvamasyadi lakshyam
Ekam nityam vimalamachalam sarvadheesaakshibhuutam
Bhaavaateetam triguna rahitam sadgurum tam namaami.
- Brahmanandam: The bliss of Brahman (the ultimate reality)
- parama sukhadam: The giver of supreme happiness
- kevalam jnaanamurtim: The embodiment of pure knowledge
- Dvandvaateetam: Beyond the pairs of opposites (like pleasure and pain, heat and cold)
- gaganasadrusham: Expansive like the sky
- tatvamasyadi lakshyam: Whose goal is indicated by the great saying "Thou art That" (referring to the identity of the individual soul with the Supreme Soul)

- nityam: Eternal
- vimalam: Pure, spotless
- achalam: Unchanging, immovable
- sarvadheesaakshibhuutam: The witness of the functions of the intellect (the inner Self that observes all thoughts and feelings)
- Bhaavaateetam: Beyond all mental conditions or emotions
- triguna rahitam: Free from the three Gunas (Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas - the qualities of nature that bind the soul)
- sadgurum: The true Guru

I bow down to that Sadguru, who is the bliss of Brahman, the giver of supreme happiness, the embodiment of pure knowledge. He is beyond duality, expansive like the sky, whose goal is indicated by the great saying 'Thou art That'. He is the one eternal, pure, unchanging witness of the functions of the intellect, who is above all mental conditions and the three Gunas.
caitanyaḥ śāśvataḥśāntō vyōmātītō nirañjanaḥ
bindunāda kalātītaḥ tasmai śrīguravē namaḥ
- caitanyaḥ: Pure consciousness or awareness
- śāśvataḥ: Eternal, unchanging
- śāntō: Peaceful, tranquil
- vyōmātītō: Beyond space or the sky
- nirañjanaḥ: Stainless, pure, without any blemish
- bindunāda kalātītaḥ: Beyond the unmanifest sound (the cosmic vibration that precedes creation) and beyond time
- tasmai: To him/her
- śrīguravē: To the glorious Guru
- namaḥ: Salutations
"Salutations to that glorious Guru, who is pure consciousness, eternal, peaceful, beyond space, stainless, beyond the unmanifest sound (the source of creation), and beyond time."
ajñānatimirāndhasya jñānāñjanaśalākayā
cakṣurunmīlitaṃ yēna tasmai śrīguravē namaḥ
- ajñānatimirāndhasya: Of one blinded by the darkness of ignorance
- jñānāñjanaśalākayā: With the collyrium-stick of knowledge
- cakṣurunmīlitaṃ: Opened the eyes
- yēna: By whom
- tasmai: To him
- śrīguravē: To the glorious Guru
- namaḥ: Salutations
akhaṇḍamaṇḍalākāraṃ vyāptaṃ yēna carācaram
tatpadaṃ darśitaṃ yēna tasmai śrīguravē namaḥ
Salutations to the glorious Guru who revealed that state (of consciousness), which pervades the entire universe in the form of an unbroken sphere, and by which the moving and the unmoving are pervaded.
sthāvaraṃ jaṅgamaṃ vyāptaṃ yatkiñcitsacarācaram
tatpadaṃ darśitaṃ yēna tasmai śrīguravē namaḥ
"Salutations to that glorious Guru, who has revealed that state (of consciousness) which pervades everything, whether stationary or moving, the entire universe, both animate and inanimate."
cinmayaṃ vyāpiyatsarvaṃ trailōkyaṃ sacarācaram
tatpadaṃ darśitaṃ yēna tasmai śrīguravē namaḥ
yat satyena jagat sarvaṃ yat prakāśena bhāti yatyadānandena nandanti tasmai śrī gurave namaḥ
na gurōradhikaṃ tattvaṃ na gurōradhikaṃ tapaḥ
tattvajñānātparaṃ nāsti tasmai śrīguravē namaḥ
"There is no truth higher than the Guru, there is no austerity higher than the Guru. There is nothing greater than the knowledge of the truth. Salutations to that glorious Guru."
mannāthaḥ śrījagannāthaḥ madguruḥ śrījagadguruḥ |
madātmā sarvabhūtātmā tasmai śrīguravē namaḥ ‖ 12 ‖
Chit rupena parivyaptam trailokyam sacharacharam
tatpadam darshitam yena tasmai sri gurave namaha
Salutations to that glorious Guru, who revealed that state (of consciousness) which, in the form of pure consciousness, pervades the three worlds along with all moving and non-moving beings.
sarvaśruti śirōratna samudbhasita murtaye
vēdāntāmbuja sūryayaḥ tasmai śrīguravē namaḥ
Salutations to that glorious Guru, whose form has arisen from the crest-jewel of all the Vedas, and who is like the sun illuminating the lotus of Vedanta.
jñānaśaktisamārūḍhaḥ tattvamālāvibhūṣitaḥ
bhuktimuktipradātā ca tasmai śrīguravē namaḥ
jñānaśaktisamārūḍhaḥ: Established in the power of knowledge (or one who has ascended the heights of knowledge and power)
"Salutations to that glorious Guru, who is established in the power of knowledge, adorned with the garland of truth, and is the bestower of both worldly enjoyment and liberation."
anēkajanmasamprāpta karmabandhavidāhinē
ātmajñānapradānēna tasmai śrīguravē namaḥ
Salutations to that glorious Guru, who, by granting the knowledge of the Self, burns the bonds of karma accumulated over countless lifetimes.
śōṣaṇaṃ bhavasindhōśca jñāpaṇaṃ sārasampadaḥ
gurōḥ pādōdakaṃ samyak tasmai śrīguravē namaḥ
"Salutations to that glorious Guru, whose water that has washed his feet completely dries up the ocean of worldly existence (samsara) and reveals the wealth of essential truth."
gururekam jagat sarvam brahma vishnu shivatmakam
guruhu parataram nasti tasmat samho jaye gurum
"The Guru alone is the entire universe, embodying Brahma (the creator), Vishnu (the preserver), and Shiva (the destroyer). There is nothing higher than the Guru. Therefore, let us together praise the Guru."
yasya deve parā bhaktir yathā deve tathā gurau
tasyaite kathitā hy arthāḥ prakāśante mahātmanaḥ
"For one who has the highest devotion to God and an equal devotion to the Guru, the meanings of the scriptures, as explained, become revealed. This happens to those great souls."
